There are certain forms that do parallel between training with the katana and training with the staff. At the same time, they’re very significantly different. There were times with my staff where I’d try to do the katana thing and I was like, “Staffs don’t do that! Swords do that!” I had to reprogram in a lot of ways, as both of them are learning curves. There’s never a time where I’m like, “I’m good! I’ve got this!” Michonne’s very economical, and efficient, and very specific with her work; whereas Okoye is coming from a place of- a certain degree of style. There’s so much tradition in what she is doing. Her approach is very by the traditional book – in terms of how she’s approaching how she moves. They kind of overlapped a little bit, but largely they felt like I was learning anew both times. – Danai Gurira
